Toxic chemicals are everywhere. They are in our household foods, food supply, prescription drugs, our personal care items and more. We cannot possibly eliminate all our exposure to them but we can do little things each day to reduce our toxic load.
Why should you care?
These chemicals hurt our body. They hurt your brain, your hormones and cause disease. It is not enough to simply focus on eating well. We must think long term and think about preventing disease as well. You may feel okay now but later could be a different story. Below is a list of just some of the health problems that can occur from toxic chemicals include:
- obesity
- infertility, miscarriage
- psoriasis
- migraine
- mental illness, depression, anxiety
- autism
- dermatitis
- leaky gut
- asthma
- respiratory issues
- food sensitivities and increased allergies
Synthetic fragrances are one group of toxins to watch out for.
About 95 percent of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum. They include benzene derivatives, aldehydes, toluene and many other known toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions (1). These synthetic scents are simply labeled as ‘fragrance’. It is a blanket term that could include 3000 and more ingrediants (2). You’ll find it in your make up, shampoos, skin care, perfumes and laundry detergents.
It is overwhelming. How can you possibly switch all products to certified organic to avoid them? Whilst it is possible it probably is unrealistic. Try reducing your exposure. Start with perfumes. Decide to stop wearing these fake scents. What you put onto your skin will get absorbed into your blood stream. If you want an alternative look for essential oils. For around the home rather than use sprays go back to the old fashion way of freshening up your home with a bunch of flowers. Indoor plants are also great for cleaning the air pollutants.
Toxic chemicals build up in your body over time, prevention is key to living a optimal life. Little by little, a little becomes a lot.
