Over the years I have observed the behaviours of many people when it comes to fat loss. A client or a friend can say they want to lose fat but more than often they do not follow through with it.
As a personal trainer they look at me for some magic fix. They look at my body and will tell me ‘I want to look like you, how do you do it’. Then that is when the excuses start.
‘I have sore knees’.
‘You are more disciplined’.
‘You don’t have kids to feed. It’s to hard making multiple meals’.
‘I get home too late. My work hours are too long’.
‘I am stressed.’
I can keep going. I have heard everything!
It is all so conflicting. Each time I see them it will be the same stories.
I can be hard with my words with clients. Tell them straight up why they have not lost weight. You can see the client think about it. They will even tell you ‘Yes you are right’. Yet they can still go back to their same old ways.
The reality is you need to look at your motivation for wanting to lose fat. Your body is not going to change unless you make some serious changes.
For most people, you know you can lose fat if you try and for long enough. To try and stick it out means you need to want to change more than you don’t want to change.
What do I mean? You need to be extremely over how you are right now.
Right now you want the extra chocolate, you want to go to restaurants, you want to have your wine and you are comfortable enough with doing all that and being how you are physically.
Face the cold hard facts, you don’t want to give it up, you don’t want to hire a trainer and you don’t want to get up early to make the time for it.
You simply are not in a place where you are prepared to take the steps required to change your body.
How long have you been saying ‘I will stick to it, this is my year’. You have probably many times contemplated contacting a naturopath or nutritionist, thinking that something must be wrong with you and that they will fix you.
It is the same old isn’t it. You repeat the same behaviours that just are not working for you.
Nothing will work unless you do. You can’t work at it for two hours a week. You have to work at it 24/7.
Do you really want this time to be different?
Drop the excuses! No more.
Everything you do counts, good and bad. That little bit of this and that is not working for you. Just because someone else is having the wine for dinner does not mean you have too! You do not have to say yes to anything. If you need to lose fat and everyone is going to the pub, do not go! You have a choice and your choice will impact you in some way small or big.
You do not need to be perfect. However, from my experience, you need to put in the work at the start harder than other people. Losing weight is different compared to maintaining it. Once you are at your weight, you can relax a bit. Notice I said a bit.
The people who are always lean make consistent good choices every day. That is how they stay lean. To get there you do need to work harder because you need to create an energy imbalance. You need to burn more calories than you consume. The person at their lean body weight only needs to balance the energy in and out.
You need to invest in your body at the start a lot. Once you build it up, getting it running efficiently then you can every so often take a break without your body going backwards.
If you really really want to change your body you need to make the hard changes at the start. Nothing worthwhile comes easy. That is the truth. If you go on a crash diet and lose a heap of weight, what normally happens? You put it back on plus more. Why? You choose the easier way which was fast.
Are you ready to make a conscious choice to change and good habits?
Are you at a place where you are willing to work hard because you need to burn more calories to create an energy deficient?
Are you prepared to feel uncomfortable because you are hungry but you cannot eat another snack?
Are you prepared to give up your favourite pasta?
It does get easier. It can feel like too much and right now you’re probably now wondering if you can do it. Think big picture. How do you want to feel in a year from now? The time passes anyway.
Being at a healthy weight and not having to think about food in great detail is incredibly empowering. Life is full of headaches, you do not need your weight stressing you out too.
You need to free up your mind to focus on things that fulfil your destiny. Not this fat loss stuff. How many years has it been of weight unhappiness? Too many.
If you are no longer going to accept this destructive behaviour from yourself then this year can be your year.
Success does not come and find you. You need to go out there find it and work for it.
